About this work

An old-style Japanese house stands in a mountain village. On the veranda two people are cleaning side by side — the mother-in-law and the wife. Wearing aprons in different colors, they cheerfully get on all fours and stick their bottoms out as they scrub. The husband keeps dozing off again and again when woken. Mio stops cleaning, steps into the garden, and shouts up to the second-floor window, “Wake up!” At that voice he finally sits up, answers, and looks toward the garden. The wife and mother-in-law are looking up. The mother-in-law’s sultry smile makes his heart race from the morning. Embarrassed, he gives an awkward chuckle.
