Sayuri Ito, 40, works as a troupe member at a small theater company in Tokyo. She is currently staying away from home due to a conflict with her mother‑in‑law. Fourteen years ago she married her husband — a fellow theater colleague — after becoming pregnant. As a result, her husband gave up his dream of becoming an actor and took a regular job. Sayuri stepped away from the stage for childbirth and childcare, but now that their child has grown she has returned to the theatrical world she loves. However, she clashed with an old‑fashioned mother‑in‑law who believes “a wife should stay at home and support her husband,” and their relationship has been strained for several years. The persistent, prickly nagging built up stress that finally exploded, and she decided to leave home.
