The water was terrifyingly delicious—so satisfying that you never tired of drinking it, and it even gave the illusion of making you thirstier the more you drank. Obsessed by its charm, the maiden achieved her wish of immortality but at the same time transformed into a great serpent. They say the giant snake still inhabits the lake as its master. —I had come to drink this lake’s water. Even if it wouldn’t grant me immortality, it was said to be like a magical water that boosted virility and restored energy. Hesitantly, I scooped some water and brought it to my lips. Then I realized someone was standing right in front of me. It was a girl—long wet hair, a white one-piece dress, big round eyes—standing there with a blank, bewildered look. I was convinced no one could possibly be here and was so startled I couldn’t move. She smiled—more of a smirk, really—and hugged me. The cold touch made me want to scream, but no sound came out. She tightened her embrace and slowly stepped backward into the lake, wrapping around me like a huge snake. Panic rose—this was bad—but I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe. Before I knew it, the water had risen to my shoulders. It was over; I gave up and closed my eyes, surrendering myself to her. —When I came to, I was standing on Center-gai in Shibuya. Had I had a fever dream from the heat? The girl’s face was vivid in my memory for a dream, yet someone I had never met. Feeling dazed, I started searching for girls to scout. Beyond a narrow street I saw a shimmering heat haze. Squinting against the brightness, the next thing I saw was the girl with long hair, a white one-piece, and big round eyes.
