When she woke up, Emi found herself in a room she didn’t recognize. "Not again," she thought. Emi sometimes lost consciousness without realizing it, and when she came to she would be trapped in an unfamiliar room. Each time, she couldn’t leave until she cleared the conditions placed before her. Sometimes there was a puzzle device; other times someone else was locked in with her. This time it was the latter. If she could satisfy a certain condition — finish this shoot safely — Emi would be allowed to go outside. Why did Emi obediently follow such an irrational, inexplicable prank? Because she knew the prankster well and had some inkling why they would do such a thing. Emi had always been painfully shy and couldn’t look people in the eye when speaking. When faced with unavoidable pressure in social interactions, she would lose consciousness. Or so she thought, but there were many occasions when traces showed she had acted during the periods she was supposed to be unconscious. Emi had developed dissociative identity disorder, commonly known as multiple personality disorder. People close to her said the alternate Emi didn’t wear glasses, spoke confidently and plainly, and was sexually uninhibited. That was exactly the image of herself Emi had longed to be. The pranks set by the alternate Emi were trials for the timid Emi, and by overcoming them the two personalities seemed able to become one again.
