Generally, women who are praised by those around them as "beautiful" are, deep down, fully aware of their own beauty—sometimes to an excessive degree. Therefore, when the face—the symbol of that beauty—is singled out to be dirtied and defaced, they feel an unparalleled shame and humiliation that ordinary people cannot fathom, and eventually that becomes the gateway to an unprecedented pleasure in which the joys and sorrows of being an "ugly beauty" are intertwined.
