千里 lives in the countryside as a widow. Forced into a life that could hardly be called wealthy, she endures hardship as a single mother trying to send her only son to university, sometimes falling behind on the rent. Driven by poverty, and knowing how degrading it is, she sells her body — turning memories into money — to childhood classmates and to the landlord who had doted on her like a daughter since she was young, earning the label of “prostitute” and becoming an outcast in the village. Her only happiness was the moments she spent with a pencil, writing letters thinking of her beloved son.
