Shiori returned to her husband's family home. This year the household was observing the first Obon for her mother-in-law. The father-in-law, whom she hadn't seen for a while, looked a little tired and faintly lonely. Still, he put on a strong front as a man for his son and daughter-in-law. Shiori was deeply moved by this different kind of masculinity and the occasional loneliness he showed, which felt unlike her husband. One day, to cheer him up, she made his favorite botamochi. The taste was uncannily like the botamochi made by the late Tomiko, and seeing Shiori triggered memories of his deceased wife; he began to cry and embraced her. Overcome by uncontrollable emotions, the father-in-law pursued sexual relations with Shiori. That act felt different from her encounters with her husband — it felt like the father's love for his late wife. Shiori resolved to treat it as something that would last only for the week of the Obon holiday; despite feeling a twinge of guilt toward her husband, she plunged into the relationship with her father-in-law.
