Shiori returns to her husband's family home. This year they held a first Obon for the mother-in-law. The father-in-law, whom she hadn't seen in a long time, looked a little tired and faintly lonely, yet put on a strong front as a man for his son and daughter-in-law. That posture — a different kind of masculinity and the occasional loneliness he showed — moved Shiori deeply. One day, to cheer him up, she made his favorite botamochi. The taste was exactly like the botamochi made by the late Tomiko, and Shiori's appearance overlapped with that of the deceased wife; before he knew it he was crying and clinging to Shiori. Overcome by uncontrollable emotions, the father-in-law ended up having sex with Shiori. However, that sexual encounter felt different from with her husband — Shiori sensed it was infused with the father's love for his late wife. Resolving it would be only for the week of the Obon holiday, and despite feeling guilt toward her husband, she throws herself into the relationship with her father-in-law.
